Why Change is Hard?!

As someone who has lived in three different countries and started over 22 businesses, I’ve often considered adaptability to be my forte. Advising tens of thousands on turning their ideas into action, I thought I had mastered the art of change. Yet, I find myself today grappling with the same fears and uncertainties that challenge us all, as if I’m someone different, not the professional with the impressive background who should know better.

But the comfort of the familiar is incredibly enticing, and the truth is, change is hard, no matter how experienced or adaptable we think we are.

But Why is Adapting to Change So Challenging?

Change, in its essence, is about transformation and moving into the unknown. While it offers opportunities for growth and development, it also presents a set of unique challenges that can be daunting, even for those who seem most prepared.

🔄 Rapid Evolution:

The world is changing at an unprecedented pace. Technologies and industries evolve, making my once cutting-edge skills seem less relevant. This rapid evolution means that what worked yesterday might not work tomorrow, pushing us to continuously adapt or risk obsolescence.

📉 Cost of Change:

As humans, we naturally accrue achievements and successes that we hold dear. Letting go of these, to embrace the unknown, feels like a high cost to pay. It’s not just about the tangible aspects, like a job or a business strategy, but also about the intangible sense of identity and competence that we associate with our past successes.

🚶‍♂️ Starting Over:

Perhaps the most daunting aspect is the idea of starting over. It’s a humbling experience to go from a place of expertise to being a beginner again. The fear of the unknown, coupled with the potential for failure, makes this one of the toughest challenges to overcome.

My Strategy for Embracing Change

In facing these challenges, I’ve realized the importance of developing strategies to not just cope with change, but to embrace it as a part of growth and personal evolution.

✅ Acknowledgment:

Acknowledging that it’s hard to start over is crucial. Viewing change not as a regression but as a new opportunity for growth and discovery is the first step.

💪 Resilience:

Viewing failures and mistakes as essential steps in moving forward is crucial. Each misstep is not a fall but a leap towards something greater, a part of the journey towards achieving something meaningful.

❤️ Self-Compassion:

Allowing ourselves to be beginners, to stumble without blame or judgment, is important. Practicing self-compassion and celebrating small victories along the way makes the journey less daunting.

📚 Lifelong Learning:

Cultivating curiosity and finding joy in continuous improvement and discovery keeps the journey interesting. It’s not just about reaching a destination but about enjoying the path we tread.

In sharing my journey and strategies, my hope is to connect with others who are navigating their own paths through change. Change is a collective experience — it shapes us, challenges us, and ultimately, can bring us together in our shared vulnerabilities and strengths.

How does change resonate with you? Have you found certain strategies to be more effective, or faced challenges that seemed insurmountable? I invite you to share your thoughts and experiences — let’s create a dialogue that enriches us all in our continuous journey of growth and adaptation.
